The Puppy Mind: Meditation and the Busy Mind

 STOP.SIT.STILL: THE PUPPY MIND

During meditation you will often hear the term “Beginners Mind” and “Monkey Mind”. With one it’s like looking at the world with fresh eyes and the other is describing a very busy mind.

Neither of these descriptions work for me. I sort of understand them at an intellectual level, but I have to think really hard about one or the other, which becomes yet another distraction and takes me further out of my body.

When I look into my very beautiful busy active mind, I see it like a load of adorable puppies in there. When one is awake, they are all awake, when one is hungry, they all are hungry. And there is the pack mentality, pack leader, you get the idea. Even visualising puppies brings me into my heart, while my mind is at its busiest.

So like puppies, my mind, need training. Regular, consistent training with treats and rewards.

I’ve created a programme, not just for me, for all of us who have the busy ‘puppy’ minds that needs constant training.
